Expertise made easy.

Case Librarian documents your IBM software solutions and the environments that host them.

Your existing solution artefacts are added to Case Librarian, which classifies and maintains them, creating a set of managed artefacts that represent each solution and environment. Environment artefacts are extracted directly from the source systems and automatically added to Case Librarian.

A single publish request generates all of the documentation for all of the information artefacts creating a managed, linked and secured set of usable information.

Generate documentation

Documentation can be published immediately from any existing solution or environment. You can add a solution package or any other solution artefact to Case Librarian and you can publish documentation for the solution in multiple forms and multiple languages.

If an artefact changes, update it with a simple check-in of the new source and generate a new version of the documentation immediately.

Share designs

The source artefacts and the published documentation are managed documents in a repository, using many of the features present in IBM FileNet Content Manager and IBM Content Navigator.

You can secure, access, preview, download and distribute information without losing control of it, using all or any of the features of IBM Content Navigator.

Compare and manage designs

Each source artefact and published document is stored and managed within the content management system. Descriptive properties are applied to all artefacts and documents so you know which object is which and how they relate to others.

Case Librarian manages versions of all the components linking them to their sources and related components. It uses the linkages to keep your growing solution library organised and to do comparisons of changes from one version to another.

Always complete and accurate

The documentation comes directly from the information artefacts so there’s no copying and pasting of information, screenshots or relying on someone to transcribe data from one tool to another.

Nothing is missed, confused or added. Most artefacts also contain more information than is sometimes presented in the tools that generate the artefacts, so Case Librarian uses that information to augment the documentation with information you may need to isolate an issue or understand a design change.

Graphical information

Many of the structures of a solution need to be seen graphically to be understood.

Case Librarian generates true representations of process and task definitions, case page layouts, class and folder hierarchies and more.

Searchable, Orderable and Filterable

Many attributes of a solution or environment only make sense once they’re arranged with other information by sorting or filtering it.

Case Librarian generates Microsoft Excel workbooks that contain the details that you need to know to manage a solution or an environment, that are easily found and related in context.

Before Case Librarian

Documentation is done as an event, probably once. It’s often out of date, missing or the wrong version. It’s difficult to understand quickly how the solution is designed, configured, managed or used.

With Case Librarian

Documentation can be created any time you need it, and is always up to date, accurate, complete and comparable. The relevant information is presented in a simple to use form, allowing you to quickly understand how it is designed, configured, deployed and controlled.

Solutions and Environments Covered

A solution is deployed through multiple environments, so you need to understand each solution in different contexts.

Case Librarian extracts and manages environment information which it uses to augment the solution details with the configuration of an environment, publishing both structural and statistical information to make it easier to manage your solutions and the environments in which they reside.

Built on IBM FileNet Content Manager and IBM Content Navigator

Case Librarian is at its core, a content management solution. It manages the source artefacts and publishes documents from those artefacts using classes, metadata, security and events from within IBM FileNet Content Manager.

It provides a user interface in IBM Content Navigator that allows you to understand the artefacts, their history and their relationships with other artefacts and the documentation that they produce.

Documentation as an Asset not a milestone

Documentation isn’t a side-bar to your solution or a check box in a set of project deliverables. Documentation is a usable source of information that should support discussion, resolve questions and help you get things done.

It needs to be correct and accurate at the moment that someone needs it, and it needs to be in a usable form to meet their need. Case Librarian allows you to generate a complete set of accurate documentation on-demand.

It provides a managed repository of information that doesn’t rely on someone copying documents or other information around. Documenting your solutions becomes part of your development cycle so you’ll always know when the artefacts were changed, published or downloaded and have documentation that is tied to the source artefact.

Multi-format and multi-lingual by design

Case Librarian is multi-lingual and both understands the language structures used within your solutions, and provides resources for publishing information in multiple languages. You can publish the same solution in more than one language or use the default settings for you, the solution or your organisation to publish something specifically.

The publishing process generates a variety of different documents in different formats. Some information is best represented as a readable document and some is best as an editable or sortable workbook or markdown. Documents can be published to PDF with or without a configurable watermark if you need to send something externally. Markdown formats allow you to embed the published information directly into your Wiki or web site, and Microsoft OneNote support allows you to embed sections of information into OneNote documents.

Managed, Controlled and Secured

The intellectual property you invest in your solutions and environment information is secure. We utilise the same technology you already use for storing the artefacts so there’s the same capability to keep it securely.

It uses the same infrastructure and same deployment tools. Case Librarian provides a focused data model so it can manage the artefacts collectively.

Case Librarian can be added into your existing development cycle, with solutions simply added to Case Librarian as part of your pipeline. It manages the rest. You can continue to use your existing solutions and systems in the same way. It doesn’t matter how you add the information, Case Librarian will manage it for you.
